Lean Body Mass

Lean body mass is the portion of total body weight that is not stored as fat, including skeletal muscle, organs, bones, body water, and connective tissue. It reflects the body’s metabolically active and structural components, although its measured value can vary with hydration and the assessment method used, such as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry or bioelectrical impedance analysis. In clinical practice, lean body mass helps evaluate nutritional status, muscle wasting, obesity, and changes associated with aging or chronic disease. Tracking it alongside fat mass can guide treatment planning, monitor responses to exercise or nutrition interventions, and support more precise interpretation of body-composition changes.

Reduced Mass Coordinates: Isolated Two-body Problem

2025

In classical mechanics, the two-body problem is one of the fundamental problems describing the motion of two interacting bodies under gravity or any other central force. When considering the motion of two bodies, one of the most important concepts is the reduced mass coordinates, a quantity that allows the two-body problem to be solved like a single-body problem. In these circumstances, it is assumed that a single body with reduced mass revolves around another body fixed in a position with an...

2016

A mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) source operated at atmospheric pressure was developed by coupling mid-infrared laser desorption and electrospray post-ionization. Exogenous ice matrix was used as the energy-absorbing matrix to facilitate resonant desorption of tissue-related material. This manuscript provides a step-by-step protocol for performing IR-MALDESI MSI of whole-body neonatal mouse.

Measuring Mass in the Laboratory

The analytical balance is the common piece of equipment in the scientific laboratory. These highly precise instruments can measure down to ten thousandths or even hundred thousandths of a gram. The triple beam balance is a type of scale that uses counterweights on a three rider beams to counterbalance the sample in the pan. On the other hand, modern analytical balances use a complex system of electronic sensors to accurately mass a substance. The analytical balance is so sensitive that it...

It occurs when the net force and the net torque on an object or system are both zero. This means that both the linear and angular accelerations are zero. Thus, the object is at rest, or its center of mass is moving at a constant velocity. However, this...

Whole-Body Nanoparticle Aerosol Inhalation Exposures

A whole-body nanoparticle aerosol inhalation exposure facility was constructed for nano-sized titanium dioxide (TiO2) inhalation toxicology studies. This system provides nano-TiO2 aerosol test atmospheres that have: 1) a steady mass concentration; 2) a homogenous composition free of contaminants; and 3) a stable particle size distribution during aerosol generation.
