Multimodal Learning

Multimodal learning is a machine learning approach that combines information from multiple data modalities, such as images, text, audio, video, and sensor measurements, to support more complete analysis and decision-making. Models align and fuse these heterogeneous inputs by learning shared representations, often using neural networks with modality-specific encoders and attention-based mechanisms to capture relationships across data types. In engineering, multimodal learning can integrate camera feeds, telemetry, speech, and maintenance records for robotics, autonomous systems, industrial monitoring, and human-machine interaction. By combining complementary signals, it can improve prediction, fault detection, system control, and resilience when one data source is incomplete or noisy.

This protocol describes the synthesis of biofunctionalized Prussian blue nanoparticles and their use as multimodal, molecular imaging agents. The nanoparticles have a core-shell design where gadolinium or manganese ions within the nanoparticle core generate MRI contrast. The biofunctional shell contains fluorophores for fluorescence imaging and targeting ligands for molecular targeting.

An Introduction to Learning and Memory

2023

Learning is the process of acquiring new information and memory is the retention or storage of that information. Different types of learning, such as non-associative and associative learning, and different types of memory, such as long-term and short-term memory, have been associated with human behaviors. Studying these components in detail helps behavioral scientists understand the neural mechanisms behind these two complex phenomena. JoVE's overview on learning and memory introduces common...
