Oil Droplets

Oil droplets are small volumes of oil dispersed within another fluid, where their size, shape, and stability are governed by interfacial tension and fluid flow. In engineering systems, droplets form when shear, mixing, or controlled breakup overcomes the oil’s cohesive forces; surfactants can adsorb at the oil–water interface and reduce coalescence, while viscosity and flow conditions influence transport and deformation. These principles support emulsion processing, droplet-based microfluidics, lubrication, separation, and thermal or chemical applications. Measuring droplet size distributions and interfacial behavior helps engineers control product performance, optimize multiphase devices, and design more stable, efficient fluid systems.

The assembly and positioning of the mitotic spindle depend on the combined forces generated by microtubule dynamics, motor proteins and cross-linkers. Here we present our recently developed methods in which the geometrical confinement of spherical emulsion droplets is used for the bottom-up reconstitution of basic mitotic spindles.

Droplet-based microfluidic platforms are promising candidates for high throughput experimentation since they are able to generate picoliter, self-compartmentalized vessels inexpensively at kHz rates. Through integration with fast, sensitive and high resolution fluorescence spectroscopic methods, the large amounts of information generated within these systems can be efficiently extracted, harnessed and utilized.

This paper presents an experimental method to produce biofuels and biochemicals from canola oil mixed with a fossil-based feed in the presence of a catalyst at mild temperatures. Gaseous, liquid, and solid products from a reaction unit are quantified and characterized. Conversion and individual product yields are calculated and reported.
