Phosphorus Diffusion

Phosphorus diffusion is the movement of phosphorus atoms through a material, typically from regions of higher concentration to lower concentration, and is important for controlling composition and properties in engineered systems. In semiconductor processing, elevated temperature gives phosphorus atoms enough mobility to enter silicon, where concentration gradients drive transport and heat-treatment time and temperature shape the resulting dopant profile and junction depth. Engineers use this process to form n-type regions, adjust carrier concentration, and tailor device behavior in integrated circuits, while diffusion modeling helps predict profiles and optimize manufacturing conditions.

Lake eutrophication is a water quality issue worldwide, making the need to identify and control nutrient sources critical. Laboratory determination of phosphorus release rates from sediment cores is a valuable approach for determining the role of internal phosphorus loading and guiding management decisions.

Soil Nutrient Analysis: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, three soil macronutrients are chemically extracted, combined with color-based reagents, then analyzed using color to determine the nutrient concentration present in the soil sample. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the main components of soil fertilizer. These methods isolate each nutrient from the soil into a solution that can be analyzed using turbidity and color to determine the...

The Phosphorus Cycle

2019

Unlike carbon, water, and nitrogen, phosphorus is not present in the atmosphere as a gas. Instead, most phosphorus in the ecosystem exists as compounds, such as phosphate ions (PO43-), found in soil, water, sediment and rocks. Phosphorus is often a limiting nutrient (i.e., in short supply). Consequently, phosphorus is added to most agricultural fertilizers, which can cause environmental problems related to runoff in aquatic ecosystems. Biological Phosphorus Cycle Phosphorus is present in many...

Cell Membranes and Diffusion In order to function, cells are required to move materials in and out of their cytoplasm via their cell membranes. These membranes are semipermeable, meaning that certain molecules are allowed to pass through, but not others. This movement of molecules is mediated by the phospholipid bilayer and its embedded proteins, some of which act as transport channels for molecules that otherwise would not be able to pass through the membrane, such as ions and carbohydrates.
