Berry Dissection

Berry dissection is a hands-on botanical method for examining the internal structure of a berry and relating fruit anatomy to plant reproduction and environmental adaptation. By making longitudinal or transverse cuts and separating the pericarp, pulp, and seeds, investigators can observe how ovary tissues develop into protective and dispersal structures while documenting traits such as seed number, tissue organization, and moisture. In environmental science and plant biology, the method supports comparisons among species, studies of fruit development and seed dispersal, and assessment of how growing conditions influence reproductive traits. It also provides an accessible model for linking plant form with ecosystem function.

This work details a step-by-step method to prepare polyphenol-rich extracts from freeze-dried berry powder. In addition, it provides a thorough description of how to use these polyphenol-rich extracts in cell culture in the presence of the peptide hormone angiotensin II (Ang II) using Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells (VSMCs).

Methodology to Test Control Agents and Insecticides Against the Coffee Berry Borer Hypothenemus hampei

A method using green coffee fruits (GFs) was developed to test the toxicity of insecticides against the coffee berry borer (CBB). Insecticides or toxic substances were applied to disinfected GFs before or after CBB infestation. Insect mortality, repellency, and reproductive capacity, in addition to other parameters, were evaluated.

The zebrafish kidney is home to both renal and hematopoietic adult stem/progenitor cells, and represents an outstanding opportunity to study these cell types and their progeny in a vertebrate model organism. Here, we demonstrate a detailed dissection procedure that enables the researcher to identify and surgically remove the adult zebrafish kidney, which can be used for applications such as cell isolation, transplantation, and expression studies of kidney and/or blood cell populations.
