Multimodal Particle Analysis

Multimodal particle analysis is an analytical approach that combines complementary measurements to characterize individual particles by properties such as size, shape, composition, and optical response. It integrates data from imaging, spectroscopy, light scattering, or other particle-measurement methods, allowing physical and chemical features to be evaluated together rather than in isolation. In environmental research, this approach helps distinguish and track aerosols, sediment particles, microplastics, and other particulate pollutants in complex samples. By linking particle characteristics with sources, transport, and environmental behavior, multimodal analysis supports more accurate monitoring, risk assessment, and evaluation of pollution-control strategies.

Here, we present a protocol to quantify allergen-loaded particles by flow cytometry. Ambient particulate matter particles may act as carriers of adsorbed allergens. We show here that flow cytometry, a method widely used to characterize suspended solids >0.5 µm in diameter, can be used to measure these allergen-loaded particles.
