Cellular Uptake

Cellular uptake is the process by which cells import extracellular molecules, particles, or microorganisms, making it essential for nutrient acquisition, communication, immune defense, and infection. Cells internalize material through mechanisms such as receptor-mediated endocytosis, pinocytosis, and phagocytosis, in which membrane receptors, cytoskeletal remodeling, and vesicle formation control what enters and how it is processed. In immunology, uptake enables phagocytes to capture pathogens and antigen-presenting cells to process foreign material for immune recognition. Studying cellular uptake also clarifies how infectious agents invade host cells and supports the design of vaccines, drug-delivery systems, and strategies that modify host-pathogen interactions.

Radiolabeled Amino Acid Uptake Assay to Quantify Cellular Uptake of Amino Acids

2025

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique for estimating amino acid uptake by bone marrow-derived stromal cells. Na+-dependent amino acid transporters mediate the uptake of radiolabeled amino acids inside the cells, and the cellular uptake is estimated by measuring the radioactivity.

Extracellular Vesicle Uptake Assay: A Method to Visualize and Quantify Cellular Uptake of Extracellular Vesicles Using 3D Fluorescence Imaging Technique
