Corneal Aberration

Corneal aberrations are optical imperfections in the cornea’s shape or refractive power that prevent incoming light from focusing precisely on the retina, making them important determinants of visual quality. They arise when different parts of the corneal surface bend light unevenly, producing lower-order errors such as defocus and astigmatism and higher-order aberrations that cannot be described by those basic refractive errors. Clinicians and researchers quantify these distortions with corneal topography and wavefront aberrometry to assess visual symptoms, guide contact-lens or refractive-surgery planning, and evaluate outcomes in conditions such as keratoconus or after corneal injury.

2012

Endothelial corneal transplantation is a surgical technique for treatment of posterior corneal diseases. Mechanical microkeratome dissection to prepare tissue results in thinner, more symmetric grafts with less endothelial cell loss and improved outcomes. Dissections can be performed at the eye bank prior to corneal transplantation surgery.
