Enterobacter Cloacae

Enterobacter cloacae is a Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic bacterium and member of the Enterobacter cloacae complex that can cause opportunistic infections, particularly in healthcare settings. It colonizes the gastrointestinal tract and may reach normally sterile sites through devices, procedures, or disrupted tissue; inducible chromosomal AmpC β-lactamase production can increase resistance during treatment with certain β-lactam antibiotics. In medicine, identifying E. cloacae in blood, urine, respiratory, or wound specimens helps guide antimicrobial selection and infection-control measures. Studying its resistance mechanisms supports accurate susceptibility testing, targeted therapy, and surveillance of emerging healthcare-associated infections.

FimH-Mediated Host Interaction of Enterobacter cloacae in a Bladder Epithelial Cell Model

Take cultures of human urinary bladder epithelial cells in a multiwell plate.Incubate the control culture with wild-type Enterobacter cloacae, a pathogenic bacterium with pili, hair-like structures on the bacterial surface. The FimH subunit of the pili binds to the host cell receptor, anchoring the wild-type bacteria to the host cell.Incubate the experimental culture with a mutant Enterobacter cloacae lacking FimH.Without FimH, the mutant bacteria fail to adhere to the host...

Generation of Enterobacter sp. YSU Auxotrophs Using Transposon Mutagenesis

2014

Enterobacter sp. YSU grows in glucose minimal salts medium. Auxotrophs are generated by transforming it with a transposome which randomly inserts itself into the host genome. Mutants are found by replica plating from complex medium to minimal medium. Interrupted genes are identified by gene rescue and sequencing.

This study describes diagnosis of avian influenza in wild birds using a portable rRT-PCR system. The method takes advantage of freeze-dried reagents to screen wild birds in a non-laboratory setting, typical of an outbreak scenario. Use of molecular tools provides accurate and sensitive alternatives for rapid diagnosis.

Development of a Zebrafish Larval Infection Model Using Microgavage

Source: Li, J., et al. Development of a Larval Zebrafish Infection Model for Clostridioides difficile. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the microgavage procedure, where an anesthetized zebrafish larva is immobilized in agarose and orally injected with a pathogenic bacterium using a tracer-guided needle. The non-invasive delivery mimics natural infection, enabling analysis of bacterial replication, toxin release, and intestinal epithelial damage.
