Fetal Liver Injection

Fetal liver injection is a prenatal delivery technique in which cells, genes, or therapeutic agents are introduced directly into the developing fetal liver, an important site of blood formation before birth. Typically performed with image guidance or microsurgical access, the procedure places the material within the liver’s vascular and hematopoietic environment, allowing exposure of developing hepatocytes and blood-forming cells. Researchers use fetal liver injection to study fetal development and evaluate prenatal gene, cell, and transplantation therapies, including approaches designed to establish donor-cell engraftment before immune maturation. Its outcomes can clarify treatment feasibility, tissue targeting, safety, and long-term therapeutic potential.

Perfusion decellularization is a novel technique to produce whole liver scaffolds that retains the organ's extracellular matrix composition and microarchitecture. Herein, the method of preparing whole organ scaffolds using perfusion decellularization and subsequent repopulation with hepatocytes is described. Functional and transplantable liver grafts can be generated using this technique.

Fetal and perinatal death is a common feature when studying genetic alterations affecting cardiac development. High-frequency ultrasound imaging has improved 2-D resolution and can provide excellent information on early cardiac development and is an ideal method to detect the impact on cardiac structure and function prior to death.
