Future Liver Remnant

The future liver remnant (FLR) is the portion of healthy liver expected to remain after surgical resection, and its size and function are central to assessing whether hepatectomy can be performed safely. Clinicians estimate FLR volume with cross-sectional imaging and relate it to total liver volume or body size, while accounting for factors such as cirrhosis, steatosis, and chemotherapy-related injury that may reduce functional reserve. When the predicted remnant is inadequate, portal vein embolization can redirect blood flow and stimulate hypertrophy before surgery. FLR assessment therefore guides operative planning, reduces the risk of post-hepatectomy liver failure, and supports individualized treatment for liver tumors.
