Intraventricular Injection

Intraventricular injection is a medical procedure that delivers medication or other therapeutic substances directly into the brain’s ventricular system, where cerebrospinal fluid circulates. A needle or implanted catheter accesses a ventricle, allowing the agent to enter cerebrospinal fluid and partially bypass the blood-brain barrier, which can limit systemic drug delivery to the central nervous system. Clinicians may use this approach for selected infections, cancer treatments, pain management, or hydrocephalus-related care, while researchers investigate its use for gene and protein therapies. Accurate placement, controlled dosing, and monitoring are essential because the procedure can cause infection, bleeding, or neurological complications.

Modeling Neonatal Intraventricular Hemorrhage Through Intraventricular Injection of Hemoglobin

2025

This video demonstrates a method to generate a rat model of neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage. In this procedure, an anesthetized rat pup is injected with hemoglobin into the lateral ventricle of the brain. The hemoglobin causes oxidative stress and releases heme, simulating intraventricular hemorrhage. The resulting damage to brain tissues, driven by reactive oxygen species and inflammatory cytokines, leads to ventricular enlargement, a common consequence of intraventricular hemorrhage.

Direct Intraventricular Delivery of Drugs to the Rodent Central Nervous System

We describe a method to target drugs to the central nervous system by either implanting a catheter or performing a bolus injection into the right lateral ventricle in mice. We focus specifically on the delivery of antisense oligonucleotides. This technique is readily adaptable to other drugs and to rats.
