Tibial Nerve Stimulation

Tibial nerve stimulation is a neuromodulation technique that applies mild electrical impulses to the tibial nerve to alter activity in connected neural pathways. Because the tibial nerve shares roots with nerves supplying the pelvic organs, stimulation can influence sacral spinal circuits involved in bladder control, helping regulate abnormal sensory signaling and involuntary detrusor contractions. Clinicians use this minimally invasive approach, delivered through percutaneous needles or surface electrodes, to manage symptoms of overactive bladder and urge urinary incontinence, particularly when behavioral strategies or medications provide insufficient relief. Its targeted mechanism also supports research into nonpharmacological treatments for pelvic and lower urinary tract disorders.

We present a protocol to assess changes in neuromuscular function. Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is a non-invasive method that evokes muscular responses. Electrophysiological and mechanical properties of these responses permit the evaluation of neuromuscular function from brain to muscle (supra-spinal, spinal and peripheral levels).

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.

Source: Brakkee, E. M., et al. Surgery and Behavioral Testing in the Tibial Neuroma Transposition Model in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2023).This video demonstrates a procedure to generate a rat tibial neuroma transposition (TNT) model. After exposing the tibial nerve in the hind leg of an anesthetized rat, transect the nerve. Next, create a subcutaneous tunnel, thread the severed nerve through the tunnel, and suture it in place. In the absence of a target for reinnervation, disorganized axonal...

Vagus Nerve Stimulation in a Rat Model to Reduce Freezing Behavior

Source: Childs, J. E., et al. Vagus Nerve Stimulation as a Tool to Induce Plasticity in Pathways Relevant for Extinction Learning. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)This video demonstrates the method of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in a rat model to reduce freezing behavior. Fear-conditioned rats receive VNS during sound re-exposure, leading to reduced freezing and revealing its therapeutic potential.
