Ultrasound Transducer Calibration

Ultrasound transducer calibration is the standardized measurement and adjustment of a probe’s electrical and acoustic performance so imaging and therapeutic outputs remain accurate, consistent, and safe. During calibration, the transducer emits controlled pulses, while reference instruments such as hydrophones, radiation-force balances, or calibrated phantoms measure parameters including frequency, pressure, intensity, sensitivity, and beam characteristics; results are compared with established specifications and correction factors applied when needed. In medicine, these checks support reliable diagnostic images, quantitative Doppler and elastography measurements, and verification of therapeutic ultrasound dose, while helping detect aging, damage, or drift that could compromise clinical decisions and equipment quality assurance.

Source: Shreyas Narsipur, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC Fluid pressure is an important flow characteristic that is required to determine the aerodynamics of a system. One of the oldest and still existing pressure measurement systems is the manometer due to its accuracy and simplicity of operation. The manometer is generally a U-shaped glass tube that is partially filled with liquid, as shown in Figure 1. The U-tube manometer requires no...

2025

This protocol describes an ultrasound transducer fixation system specifically designed for ultrasound stimulation of the spinal cord in awake mice. The method employs a fixation system to ensure accurate positioning of the ultrasound transducer while simultaneously allowing the experimental subjects to move freely without compromising the precision of stimulation.

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Calibration curves are used to understand the instrumental response to an analyte and predict the concentration in an unknown sample. Generally, a set of standard samples are made at various concentrations with a range than includes the unknown of interest and the instrumental response at each concentration is recorded. For more accuracy and to understand the error, the response at each concentration can be repeated so an error...
