Distribution Systems

Distribution systems are the networks and processes that move goods and services from producers to consumers, shaping how markets function and how value reaches buyers. In microeconomics, they coordinate activities such as transportation, storage, wholesaling, retailing, and information exchange while allocating products across locations and time; firms choose among channels by weighing transaction costs, prices, capacity, and consumer access. Analyzing distribution systems helps explain market efficiency, supply availability, retail competition, and price differences between producers and consumers. These systems also clarify how technological change, vertical integration, and disruptions in logistics can affect costs, market power, and the welfare of firms and households.
