Baseline To Peak Amplitude

Baseline-to-peak amplitude is a measurement of the voltage difference between a neural signal’s baseline level and its largest positive or negative deflection, providing a standardized estimate of response magnitude. Researchers determine the baseline over a defined interval, identify the signal peak or trough after an event or stimulus, and calculate the change between these points. In neuroscience, this measure is used with electrophysiological recordings such as evoked potentials and other time-varying neural signals to compare response strength across conditions, participants, or experimental groups. It can help assess stimulus-related activity, characterize neural processing, and quantify changes associated with neurological function or disease.

This article describes the semi-automated measurement of the amplitudes and latencies of the first five peaks and troughs in the auditory brainstem response waveform. An additional routine compiles and annotates the data into a spreadsheet for experimenter analysis. These free computer routines are executed using the open-source statistical package R.

Pulse amplitude and quality

2024

Pulse amplitude is a crucial indicator of cardiac health because it provides valuable insights into the strength of left ventricular contractions and the overall uniformity of blood circulation within the vasculature. The strength of the pulse is directly related to the force with which the heart contracts and the volume of blood being pumped. A weak or absent pulse may indicate reduced cardiac output or poor left ventricular contraction, which can be signs of cardiovascular dysfunction or...

We present a method for achieving sub-nanometer resolution images with amplitude-modulation (tapping mode) atomic force microscopy in liquid. The method is demonstrated on commercial atomic force microscopes. We explain the rationale behind our choices of parameters and suggest strategies for resolution optimization.

IR Spectrum Peak Intensity: Dipole Moment

2024

The dipole moment of a bond is the product of the partial charge on either atom and the distance between them. Dipole moments influence the efficiency of IR absorption and the peak intensity. When a bond with a dipole moment is placed in an electric field, the direction of the field determines if the bond is compressed or stretched. Electromagnetic radiation consists of an electric field component that rapidly reverses direction. It follows that polar bonds are alternately stretched and...

IR Spectrum Peak Intensity: Amount of IR-Active Bonds

2024

When infrared radiation is passed through a molecule, absorption occurs if the molecule's vibration leads to a substantial change in its bond dipole moment. Transitions between vibrational energy levels, typically corresponding to infrared frequencies (4000–400 cm−1), allow absorption if the vibration significantly alters the dipole moment, making the molecule infrared active. The molecular bonds have different stretching and bending vibrations, resulting in various peaks with varying...
