Facial Skin Deformation

Facial skin deformation is the movement, stretching, compression, or folding of facial skin produced by underlying muscle activity, external forces, or changes in facial posture. In neuroscience, these deformations activate mechanoreceptors that detect pressure, tension, and skin displacement, sending sensory signals through the trigeminal system while facial motor pathways coordinate expression-related movements. Measuring deformation with imaging, motion tracking, or specialized sensors helps researchers relate physical facial changes to emotion, perception, social communication, and sensorimotor control. This topic also supports studies of facial-expression recognition, neurological disorders, prosthetic or robotic interfaces, and how sensory feedback shapes facial behavior.

As technology develops and becomes more user-friendly, planning of operations and patient-specific surgical guides and fixation plates should be performed by the surgeon. We present a protocol for 3D planning of orthognathic skeletal movements and 3D planning and printing of patient-specific fixation plates and surgical guides.

A technique for transplanting "Extreme Anterior Domain" facial tissue between Xenopus laevis embryos has been developed. Tissue can be moved from one gene expression background into another, allowing the study of local requirements for craniofacial development and for signaling interactions between facial regions.

Source: Jakobs, M., et al. Subcutaneous Trigeminal Nerve Field Stimulation for Refractory Facial Pain. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This procedure demonstrates the implantation of subcutaneous electrodes for trigeminal nerve stimulation to treat neuropathic facial pain. The electrodes are tunneled subcutaneously from the affected facial region to an infraclavicular pocket, where they are connected to an internal pulse generator (IPG). The IPG delivers electrical stimulation, activating mechanoreceptor...
