Rat Brain Ischemia Model

The rat brain ischemia model is an in vivo experimental system that reproduces reduced cerebral blood flow and the resulting neural injury, supporting research on stroke and other ischemic disorders. Researchers induce focal or global ischemia, either temporarily or permanently, to limit oxygen and glucose delivery; reperfusion may then restore circulation and model ischemia-reperfusion injury. Investigators assess neurological behavior, infarct formation, neuronal damage, inflammation, and vascular responses to clarify disease mechanisms and evaluate therapeutic strategies. Because the model connects physiological disruption with measurable functional and tissue outcomes, it remains an important tool in neuroscience, neuroprotection studies, and translational stroke research.

2-Vessel Occlusion/Hypotension: A Rat Model of Global Brain Ischemia

Cited by 35 •

2013

Bilateral carotid occlusion coupled with systemic hypotension produces global brain ischemia in the rat, resulting in damage to the hippocampus with reproducible severity. Animal subjects are impaired with predictable patterns of brain damage, they recover expediently, and mortality rates are comparatively low.

Modeling Encephalopathy of Prematurity Using Prenatal Hypoxia-ischemia with Intra-amniotic Lipopolysaccharide in Rats

Encephalopathy of prematurity encompasses the central nervous system abnormalities associated with injury from preterm birth. This report describes a clinically relevant rat model of in utero transient systemic hypoxia-ischemia and intra-amniotic lipopolysaccharide administration (LPS) that mimics chorioamnionitis, and the related impact of infectious stimuli and placental underperfusion on CNS development.

Reproducible Motor Deficit Following Aortic Occlusion in a Rat Model Of Spinal Cord Ischemia

This study demonstrates the technique to make a minimally invasive and easily reproducible model of spinal cord ischemia in rats. Various degrees of hind limb motor deficit can be produced by controlling the aortic occlusion time.

A Rat Model of Tibial Cortex Transverse Transport for the Treatment of Lower Limb Ischemia

This procedure demonstrates tibial cortex transverse transport in rats, enabling visualization and analysis of revascularization during limb ischemia.

Inducing Ischemia via Middle Cerebral and Common Carotid Artery Occlusion in a Rat Model

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure of performing permanent distal middle cerebral artery occlusion, or MCAO, with the common carotid artery, or CCA ligation, in aged rats to model ischemic stroke. This blocks blood flow to the brain, leading to neuronal death and generating a model to study stroke mechanisms and potential treatments.
