Stimulus Isolation Unit

A stimulus isolation unit is a neuroscience device that electrically separates a stimulation circuit from ground while delivering controlled pulses to neural tissue, improving experimental safety and signal reliability. It receives timing signals from a stimulator and uses electrical isolation to transfer the stimulus without a direct conductive path, helping limit ground loops, unwanted current, and interference. Researchers use these units in electrophysiology, neurophysiology, and behavioral experiments to apply reproducible electrical stimulation to nerves, brain regions, or muscles while recording neural activity. This isolation supports cleaner measurements and helps protect both biological preparations and connected recording equipment.

A Method for the Isolation of Neurovascular Units from Rat Brain

2025

This video demonstrates the process of isolating brain microvessels from euthanized rats. It includes the dissection of the brain, cleaning of the tissue, and mechanical digestion, followed by repeated centrifugation to isolate the pure fraction of microvessels.

Inducing Axonal Varicosities with a Micromechanical Stimulus on Neurons

2025

This video demonstrates the induction of axonal varicosities by applying micromechanical stimulus on neurons. The system comprises a micropipette attached to a syringe containing buffer via tubing. Using a micromanipulator, the micropipette is positioned above the neurons. Fluid pressure is then applied to induce varicosities in axons.

We present a protocol to isolate adipose tissue-derived microvascular fragments that represent promising vascularization units. They can be rapidly isolated, do not require in vitro processing and, thus, may be used for one-step prevascularization in different fields of tissue engineering.

Measurement: Standard Units

2020

Every measurement provides three kinds of information: the size or magnitude of the measurement (a number), a standard of comparison for the measurement (a unit), and an indication of the uncertainty of the measurement. While the number and unit are explicitly represented when a quantity is written, the uncertainty is an aspect of the errors in the measurement results. The number in the measurement can be represented in different ways, including decimal form and scientific notation, which is...

Measurement: Derived Units

The International System of Units or SI system, by international agreement, has fixed measurement units for seven fundamental properties: length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount of substance, and luminosity. These are called the SI base units. Units of measurement derived from the mathematical combination of SI base units are called SI-derived units. For example, the ratio of the SI unit for distance (meter; m) and the SI unit for time (second; s) gives the SI-derived unit...
