Upper Trunk Injury

Upper trunk injury is damage to the superior portion of a nerve network, most commonly the upper trunk of the brachial plexus, which connects cervical spinal nerves to the shoulder and arm. It typically results from traction, compression, or other trauma affecting fibers derived primarily from C5 and C6, disrupting motor and sensory signaling to muscles and skin. The resulting weakness may impair shoulder abduction, external rotation, and elbow flexion, while sensory loss can occur along the lateral arm and forearm. In neuroscience, studying these injuries supports lesion localization, prognosis, nerve repair decisions, and rehabilitation strategies that promote functional recovery.

An approach to analyze the migration of explanted cells (trunk neural crest cells) is described. This method is inexpensive, gentle, and capable of distinguishing chemotaxis from both chemokinesis and other influences on migratory polarity such as those derived from cell-cell interactions within the primary trunk neural crest cell culture.
