Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a chronic mood disorder marked by recurrent episodes of mania or hypomania and depression, making effective long-term management essential. Its symptoms arise from complex dysregulation of neural circuits, intracellular signaling, and neurotransmitter systems involved in mood, energy, and cognition. Pharmacological treatment uses mood stabilizers such as lithium and anticonvulsant medications, along with selected atypical antipsychotics, to reduce acute symptoms and prevent relapse; these drugs act through mechanisms including modulation of intracellular pathways, neuronal excitability, and dopamine and serotonin receptor signaling. Understanding their benefits, limitations, and adverse effects supports individualized treatment and advances research into more precise therapies.

Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental health condition marked by significant mood fluctuations, including episodes of mania and depression. Elevated energy levels, heightened mood or irritability, impulsive behavior, reduced sleep needs, rapid speech, racing thoughts, inflated self-esteem, and distractibility characterize mania. Individuals with bipolar disorder often alternate between depressive and manic states, with periods of emotional stability lasting an average of six months to a year.

Bipolar Junction Transistor

2024

Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs) are essential elements in electronic circuits, playing a crucial role in the functionality of amplifiers, memories, and microprocessors. These transistors can be designed as NPN or PNP based on their doping patterns. They consist of three layers: the emitter, base, and collector. The configuration of these layers and their respective doping levels—with N-type or P-type impurities—define the transistor's type and its operational characteristics. The structure...

Intrinsically Disordered Proteins

2020

Intrinsically disordered proteins are a group of proteins that do not fold into specific three-dimensional structures. Their structural flexibility allows them to complement ordered proteins to perform functions that are inaccessible to rigid structures. They are more common in eukaryotes than prokaryotes and may either be exclusively intrinsically disordered or hybrid proteins, consisting of a mix of ordered and disordered regions. The absence of a rigid structure in these proteins can be...
