Murine Models

Murine models are laboratory mice used to represent aspects of human biology, disease, and drug response, making them a central tool in pharmacological research. Investigators administer a compound at defined doses and measure pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic outcomes, including absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, target engagement, dose-response relationships, and toxicity. These models support preclinical evaluation of therapeutic efficacy, safety, mechanisms of action, and biomarkers before clinical studies, while genetically modified strains can help clarify disease pathways or drug targets. Findings must be interpreted alongside species differences that can limit translation to human patients.

The present protocol describes a standardized surgical method for the induction of carotid aneurysms in a murine model through a single surgical operation.

Murine Model of Epicutaneously-Induced Immunomodulation

The study demonstrates the role of the skin in modulating immune responses in mice through epicutaneous (EC) immunization. EC immunization with a protein antigen can suppress immune responses in contact hypersensitivity or reverse skin-induced suppression when combined with pathogen-associated molecular patterns. EC immunization shows promise as an effective, needle-free approach to immunotherapy.

The purpose of this protocol is to imitate human group B Streptococcus (GBS) vaginal colonization in a murine model. This method may be used to investigate host immune responses and bacterial factors contributing to GBS vaginal persistence, as well as to test therapeutic strategies.

A Method to Induce Ocular Surface Inflammation in a Murine Model

2025

This video demonstrates a method to induce ocular surface inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction in a murine model. Stimulation of the mouse's immune system using an immunogen and later restimulation with the same immunogen promotes ocular surface inflammation, which causes plugging of meibomian gland secretion through neutrophil-produced aggNETs and leads to dry eye disease.
