Receptor Occupancy

Receptor occupancy is the proportion of a cell’s or tissue’s receptors bound by a drug, hormone, neurotransmitter, or other ligand, and it helps relate molecular binding to pharmacological effects. Occupancy depends on ligand concentration, receptor affinity, and competition, increasing as ligand levels rise toward a binding equilibrium; however, binding alone does not determine the magnitude of a response. In pharmacology, measuring or modeling receptor occupancy supports dose selection, interpretation of dose-response relationships, and assessment of target engagement. It also helps researchers compare compounds, distinguish efficacy from binding, and anticipate how competing ligands may alter drug action.

2025

Position a human participant’s head within the head coil of a functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, system.Employ vascular space occupancy or VASO, a technique to measure changes in cerebral blood volume, or CBV, the blood volume within the brain.Begin by applying an inversion recovery pulse to suppress signals from blood, allowing only signals from the surrounding tissue within the region to be detected.Next, use MRI-compatible earbuds to deliver auditory stimuli. The stimuli reach...

Collection and Extraction of Occupational Air Samples for Analysis of Fungal DNA

2018

Determining the fungal diversity within an environment is a method utilized in occupational health studies to identify health hazards. This protocol describes DNA extraction from occupational air samples for amplification and sequencing of fungal ITS regions. This approach detects many fungal species that can be overlooked by traditional assessment methods.

Methods to Investigate the Regulatory Role of Small RNAs and Ribosomal Occupancy of Plasmodium falciparum

2015

Human microRNAs translocate from host erythrocytes to Plasmodium falciparum parasites. Here, the techniques used to transfect synthetic microRNAs into host erythrocytes and isolate all RNAs from P. falciparum are described. In addition, this paper will detail a method of polysome isolation in P. falciparum to determine the ribosomal occupancy and translational potential of parasite transcripts.
