Cohort Effect

A cohort effect is a pattern of differences among people born or entering a population during the same period, reflecting experiences shared by that group rather than individual development alone. In psychology, cohort effects arise when historical events, cultural norms, technology, education, or economic conditions shape attitudes, behavior, and cognitive or emotional development across a generation. Researchers examine these influences by comparing age groups over time and separating cohort effects from age effects and period effects, which affect people of different ages simultaneously. Recognizing cohort effects strengthens the interpretation of developmental, survey, and longitudinal research and helps explain why psychological findings may vary across generations.

Here we describe our detailed protocol for the preparation of single-cohort honeybee colonies – a useful tool for analyzing the role-associated worker physiology. We also describe detailed protocols for treating workers with juvenile hormone and ecdysone to evaluate the involvement of these hormones in the regulation of worker behavior and/or physiology.

Candidate Gene Testing in Clinical Cohort Studies with Multiplexed Genotyping and Mass Spectrometry

Identification of genetic variants contributing to complex human disease allows us to identify novel mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate a multiplex genotyping approach to candidate genes or gene pathway analysis that maximizes the coverage at low cost and is amenable to cohort-based studies.

Here, we present a protocol to quantify allergen-loaded particles by flow cytometry. Ambient particulate matter particles may act as carriers of adsorbed allergens. We show here that flow cytometry, a method widely used to characterize suspended solids >0.5 µm in diameter, can be used to measure these allergen-loaded particles.

Experimental Manipulation of Body Size to Estimate Morphological Scaling Relationships in Drosophila

2011

Morphological scaling relationships capture and describe organismal shape. We present a method to measure morphological scaling relationships across the natural range of body sizes in fully metamorphic insects. Using a simple diet manipulation we increase the distribution of trait sizes, permitting the accurate description of how shape and size co-vary.
