Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion

Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion is a composite-manufacturing method that produces lightweight, fiber-reinforced structures by using vacuum pressure to introduce resin into a dry fiber preform. In a sealed vacuum bag, the pressure difference draws liquid resin through porous reinforcement, wets the fibers, and allows the impregnated material to cure into a rigid composite. In bioengineering, this process supports fabrication of prosthetic limbs, orthotic devices, and other biomedical components requiring high strength with low weight. Control of resin flow, fiber placement, and curing conditions helps produce consistent structures while limiting excess material and improving manufacturing efficiency.

Source: Robert M. Rioux, Ajay Sathe & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Vacuum is required for a number of laboratory procedures. This is most routinely achieved in the laboratory by the use of vacuum pumps. In addition to working at low pressures, vacuum pumps can also be used to enable rapid changing of the atmospheres in a reactor or flask by evacuation and backfilling.

Source: Schregel, K., et al. Optimized Management of Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke using the stent retriever-assisted vacuum-locked extraction technique. A guiding sheath is introduced through the femoral artery to reach the clot. A catheter with a stent retriever secures and extracts the clot. Vascular imaging is done to confirm successful reperfusion.

Source: Schaeffer, J. W., Chandler, et al. Detection of Viruses from Bioaerosols Using Anion Exchange Resin. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the detection of viruses from bioaerosols using an anion exchange resin. A liquid impinger containing the resin is used to capture viruses from the air. The resin is collected and treated with a virus lysis buffer containing carrier RNA. The lysate is transferred to a microcentrifuge tube for viral RNA isolation, followed by qRT-PCR to amplify...
