Chemical Compounds

Chemical compounds are pure substances formed when atoms of two or more different elements join through chemical bonds, producing properties distinct from those of their constituent elements. They form through chemical reactions that rearrange atoms by breaking and creating bonds, often through electron sharing in covalent bonds or electron transfer in ionic bonds; their composition follows a defined ratio. In chemistry, studying compounds helps explain molecular structure, reactivity, solubility, and physical behavior. This knowledge supports the design and analysis of medicines, materials, fuels, catalysts, and industrial products, while guiding laboratory synthesis and environmental research.

Molecules and Compounds

Atoms and Molecules Everything in the universe is made up of matter, and matter is composed of a combination of elements. An atom is the smallest unit of an element that retains all properties of the element. For example, a silver coin is made up of silver atoms, and each silver atom retains the unique properties of the element — silver. Elements are pure substances consisting of identical atoms that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical changes. Atomic elements contain...

Rapid Evaluation of Toxicity of Chemical Compounds Using Zebrafish Embryos

Zebrafish embryos are used for evaluating the toxicity of chemical compounds. They develop externally and are sensitive to chemicals, allowing detection of subtle phenotypic changes. The experiment only requires a small amount of compound, which is directly added to the plate containing embryos, making the testing system efficient and cost-effective.

Chemical Formulas

2020

A chemical formula presents information about the proportions of atoms constituting a particular chemical compound or molecule, mainly using symbols of elements and numbers. At times other symbols, such as dashes, parentheses, brackets, commas, plus, and minus signs, are also used. A chemical formula can be one of three types – molecular, empirical, and structural. Molecular Formula The molecular formula represents a molecule or a chemical compound using chemical symbols (to indicate the...

Organic Compounds

All living things are formed mostly of carbon compounds called organic compounds. The category of organic compounds includes both natural and synthetic compounds that contain carbon. Although a single, precise definition has yet to be identified by the chemistry community, most agree that a defining trait of organic molecules is the presence of carbon as the principal element, bonded to hydrogen and other carbon atoms. However, some carbon-containing compounds such as carbonates, cyanides, and...
