Animal Model Endometriosis

Animal models of endometriosis are experimental systems used to reproduce key features of endometrial tissue outside the uterus and study this chronic gynecologic disease. Researchers commonly implant uterine tissue into the peritoneal cavity of rodents, where ovarian hormones support ectopic lesion growth and trigger local inflammation, angiogenesis, immune responses, and sometimes pain behaviors. These models help investigators examine disease mechanisms, evaluate hormonal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-angiogenic treatments, and assess effects on fertility and pelvic pain, while differences from human menstrual biology require careful interpretation.

Many rodent models of endometriosis are limited by technical complexity, reproducibility, and/or need for immunocompromised animals or special reporter mice. We present a simplified system of lesion induction using any experimental mouse with an independently verifiable, objective scoring system and with no requirement for ovariectomy or survival surgery.

Most studies involving the Langendorff apparatus use small animal models due to the increased complexity of systems for larger mammals. We describe a Langendorff system for large animal models that allows for use across a range of species, including humans, and relatively easy data acquisition.
