Anterior Tibial Muscle

The anterior tibial muscle, also called the tibialis anterior, is a skeletal muscle in the anterior compartment of the lower leg that lifts the foot and supports controlled walking. Motor neurons transmit signals through the deep fibular nerve to neuromuscular junctions, where acetylcholine initiates actin–myosin contraction that dorsiflexes the ankle and assists foot inversion. In neuroscience, this muscle provides a useful model for studying motor-unit recruitment, spinal reflexes, peripheral nerve function, and sensorimotor control. Assessing its strength and electrical activity can help identify neurological injury, including deep fibular nerve dysfunction, and clarify changes in gait and movement coordination.

Muscles of the Anterior Neck

The anterior neck muscles are the group of muscles covering the front part of the neck. These muscles are classified into three subgroups. The first one is the superficial muscles, the most visible muscles in the front of the neck. It includes the platysma and sternocleidomastoid. The second group is the suprahyoid muscles, located above the hyoid bone. This group comprises the digastric, mylohyoid, geniohyoid, and stylohyoid. Lastly, the infrahyoid muscles are found below the hyoid bone and...

Generating a Rat Model of Tibial Neuroma Transposition

Source: Brakkee, E. M., et al. Surgery and Behavioral Testing in the Tibial Neuroma Transposition Model in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2023).This video demonstrates a procedure to generate a rat tibial neuroma transposition (TNT) model. After exposing the tibial nerve in the hind leg of an anesthetized rat, transect the nerve. Next, create a subcutaneous tunnel, thread the severed nerve through the tunnel, and suture it in place. In the absence of a target for reinnervation, disorganized axonal...

Changes in limb muscle contractile and passive mechanical properties are important biomarkers for muscle diseases. This manuscript describes physiological assays to measure these properties in the murine extensor digitorum longus and tibialis anterior muscles.

Surgical Angiogenesis in Porcine Tibial Allotransplantation: A New Large Animal Bone Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation Model

Currently any kind of vascularized composite allotransplantation depends on long-term-immunosuppression, difficult to support for non-life-critical indications. We present a new porcine tibial VCA model that can be used to study bone VCA and demonstrate the use of surgical angiogenesis to maintain bone viability without the need of long-term immune-modulation.
