Oppositely Charged Liposomes

Oppositely charged liposomes are lipid-bilayer vesicles with complementary surface charges, providing a controllable model for electrostatic interactions in biochemistry. When mixed, attractive forces between positively and negatively charged membranes can promote adhesion, charge neutralization, aggregation, or membrane fusion, depending on lipid composition, ionic strength, and charge density. These behaviors help researchers study membrane organization, lipid-protein interactions, and the formation of supramolecular assemblies. Oppositely charged liposomes also support applications in drug and biomolecule delivery, where electrostatic association can improve cargo loading, membrane binding, and interaction with target cells.

A persistent pattern of angry or irritable mood, defiant behavior, or vindictiveness characterizes Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Symptoms must occur over at least six months, involve interactions with individuals beyond siblings, and meet specific diagnostic criteria to be clinically significant. The disorder affects emotional regulation, social interactions, and behavior, often manifesting early in life and influencing long-term development and functioning. Diagnostic Criteria and...

Formal Charges

In some cases, there are seemingly more than one valid Lewis structures for molecules and polyatomic ions. The concept of formal charges can be used to help predict the most appropriate Lewis structure when more than one reasonable structure exists. Calculating Formal Charge The formal charge of an atom in a molecule is the hypothetical charge the atom would have if the electrons in the bonds are evenly distributed between the atoms. Alternatively, formal charge results when from the number...

Targeted siRNA Delivery to Neurons for Prion Protein Silencing Using Liposomal Complexes

Source: Bender, H. R., et.al. Delivery of Therapeutic siRNA to the CNS Using Cationic and Anionic Liposomes. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates the targeted delivery of prion protein (PrP) siRNA to neurons using liposomal siRNA-peptide complexes (LSPCs). Cationic liposomes electrostatically bind PrP-targeting siRNA, which is further stabilized by the RVG-9r peptide for receptor-mediated transport across the blood-brain barrier. Once inside the brain, LSPCs undergo endocytosis in...

Ions and Ionic Charges

In ordinary chemical reactions, the nucleus — which contains the protons and neutrons of each atom and thus identifies the element — remains unchanged. Electrons, however, can be added to atoms by transfer from other atoms, lost by transfer to other atoms, or shared with other atoms. The transfer and sharing of electrons among atoms govern the chemistry of the elements. During the formation of some compounds, atoms gain or lose electrons to form electrically charged particles called ions. When...
