Finger Prick Blood

Finger prick blood is a small capillary blood sample obtained from the fingertip for rapid testing and biomedical analysis, offering a minimally invasive alternative to venous collection. A sterile lancet punctures the skin, and gentle pressure allows blood droplets to enter a collection device, test strip, or microfluidic system; the sample can then be analyzed for cellular, chemical, or molecular markers. In bioengineering, finger prick blood supports point-of-care diagnostics, portable biosensors, and at-home monitoring by reducing sample volume, equipment requirements, and processing time. These advantages help researchers develop accessible technologies for disease screening, personalized care, and decentralized health monitoring.

Exercise is capable of inducing apoptosis in immune cells. There are various measurement limitations, particularly relating to the amount of time required to isolate and treat a blood sample prior to the assessment. Demonstrated is a rapid and minimally invasive procedure for the analysis of exercise-induced lymphocyte apoptosis.

We describe a computer-controlled device for investigating the sense of touch: the Tactile Automated Passive-finger Stimulator (TAPS). We describe the components of TAPS, and show how TAPS is used to administer a two-interval forced-choice tactile grating orientation test.

Detection of Rhesus Factor in Human Blood Samples using Magnetic Levitation

2025

This video demonstrates the detection of the Rhesus (Rh) factor in blood samples using a magnetic levitation instrument. The magnetic field aligns and levitates beads and blood cells based on density. Treating the samples with anti-Rh antibodies results in intermediate-density bead-cell complexes' formation, allowing for the differentiation of Rh-positive and Rh-negative red blood cells.

This protocol details an assay designed to measure human neutrophil chemotaxis from one droplet of whole blood with robust reproducibility. This approach circumvents the need for neutrophil separation and requires only a few minutes of assay preparation time. The microfluidic chip enables the repeated measure of neutrophil chemotaxis over time in infants or small mammals, where sample volume is limited.
