Gold Microelectrodes

Gold microelectrodes are miniaturized conductive electrodes made from gold that interface with biological systems for recording, stimulation, or chemical measurement. Their operation depends on electron transfer at the electrode–electrolyte interface, where ionic signals in biological fluids are converted into measurable electrical currents or potentials; gold’s conductivity and chemical stability support this interaction. In biological techniques, researchers use gold microelectrodes for electrophysiological recordings, electrochemical biosensing, and localized stimulation of cells or tissues. Their small dimensions enable spatially selective measurements, while surface modification can improve sensitivity, biocompatibility, or selectivity for specific biomolecules.
