Bronchial Aspirate

Bronchial aspirate is a sample of mucus and cellular material suctioned from the bronchi, providing biological information about the lower respiratory tract. Clinicians collect it through an endotracheal tube or bronchoscope, using negative pressure to remove airway secretions while limiting contamination from the upper airways. Laboratory analysis can include microscopy, culture, molecular testing, and cytology to identify microorganisms, inflammatory responses, or abnormal cells. In biology and clinical research, bronchial aspirates support investigations of respiratory infections, airway inflammation, lung disease, and treatment response, making them valuable for connecting airway biology with disease mechanisms and patient outcomes.

Here we describe a detailed method for growing primary human bronchial epithelial cells from explants of human bronchial airway tissue including differentiated growth on an air-liquid interface. This method provides an abundant source of primary cells for investigating the role of the airway epithelium in human lung health and disease.

Bronchial Thermoplasty: A Novel Therapeutic Approach to Severe Asthma

Cited by 4 •

2010

Bronchial thermoplasty is a non-drug procedure for severe persistent asthma that delivers thermal energy to the airway wall in a precisely controlled manner to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle. Reducing airway smooth muscle decreases the ability of the airways to constrict, thereby reducing the frequency of asthma attacks.

The Bronchial Tree

2025

The human bronchi and bronchial tree play a crucial role in the respiratory system, facilitating the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Let's delve into the intricate structure and functions of these respiratory components. The trachea, commonly known as the windpipe, is a tube that connects the larynx (voice box) to the bronchi. At a point called the carina, it bifurcates into two primary bronchi. The right primary bronchus is wider, shorter, and more vertical than the left primary...

The aim of this protocol is to expose human organotypic 3D bronchial and nasal tissue models to mainstream cigarette smoke (CS) at the air-liquid interface. The impact of CS on the tissues is then investigated using a cytochrome P450 activity assay, a cilia beating measurement, and a systems biology approach.
