Lipid Synthesis

Lipid synthesis is the set of biochemical pathways that produce fatty acids, triglycerides, phospholipids, and other lipids required for cellular structure, energy storage, and signaling. In animals, acetyl-CoA provides carbon units for fatty acid synthesis, while fatty acid synthase uses reducing power from NADPH to extend the carbon chain; enzymes in the endoplasmic reticulum then assemble fatty acids with glycerol backbones into complex lipids. These pathways respond to nutrient and hormonal signals and help maintain membrane composition and energy balance. Studying lipid synthesis supports research on metabolism, cell biology, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and potential therapeutic targets.

Structure of Lipids

2020

Lipids include a diverse group of compounds that are largely nonpolar in nature. This is because they are hydrocarbons that include mostly nonpolar carbon-carbon or carbon-hydrogen bonds. Non-polar molecules are hydrophobic (“water fearing”), or insoluble in water. Lipids perform many different functions in a cell. Cells store energy for long-term use in the form of fats. Lipids also provide insulation from the environment for plants and animals. For example, they help keep aquatic birds and...

Purification of a Total Lipid Extract with Column Chromatography

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The product of an organic solvent extraction, a total lipid extract (TLE), is often a complex mixture of hundreds, if not thousands, of different compounds. The researcher is often only interested in a handful of compounds. The compounds of interest may belong to one of several classes of compounds, such as alkanes, ketones, alcohols, or acids (Figure 1), and it may be useful to remove the compound classes to which it does...

Source: Amber N. Barron, Ashlea Patterson, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Hydrogels are a versatile class of cross-linked polymers produced through relatively simple procedures and with generally inexpensive materials. They can be formed from solution and involve a polymer backbone formed from monomer reagents, an initiator which makes the polymer reactive and a crosslinking species which binds the polymer chains...

Here, we present a protocol for the synthesis of placental chondroitin sulfate A binding peptide (plCSA-BP)-conjugated lipid-polymer nanoparticles via single-step sonication and bioconjugate techniques. These particles constitute a novel tool for the targeted delivery of therapeutics to most human tumors and placental trophoblasts to treat cancers and placental disorders.
