Myocardial Biopsy Procedure

Myocardial biopsy is an invasive diagnostic procedure that removes small samples of heart muscle for microscopic and molecular analysis, helping clinicians identify diseases that may not be evident from imaging or blood tests. During the procedure, a catheter is guided through a blood vessel, commonly into the right ventricle, where biopsy forceps collect several tissue fragments for histopathology and specialized testing. Clinicians use myocardial biopsy to evaluate suspected myocarditis, infiltrative or storage disorders, and unexplained cardiomyopathy, and to detect rejection after heart transplantation. The findings can guide treatment, assess disease activity, and support ongoing clinical monitoring.
