Avian Embryonic Development

Avian embryonic development is the sequence of biological processes through which a fertilized bird egg becomes an organized embryo, making it a valuable model for understanding vertebrate development. After cleavage, cells undergo gastrulation to establish the germ layers, followed by neurulation and organogenesis as signaling pathways, cell movements, and tissue interactions shape the body plan; the yolk and extraembryonic membranes provide nutrients, gas exchange, and protection. In developmental biology, chick embryos support direct observation and experimental manipulation of early development, helping researchers investigate gene function, tissue patterning, organ formation, and the evolutionary conservation of developmental mechanisms.

Here, we describe a method for isolation, culture and manipulation of mouse embryonic pancreas. This represents an excellent ex vivo system for studying various aspects of pancreatic development, including morphogenesis, differentiation and growth. Pancreatic bud explants can be cultured for several days and used in a range of different applications, including whole-mount immunofluorescence and live imaging.

Microinjection-based System for In Vivo Implantation of Embryonic Cardiomyocytes in the Avian Embryo

2019

In this method, embryonic cardiac tissues are surgically microdissected, dissociated, fluorescently labeled, and implanted into host embryonic tissues. This provides a platform for studying the individual or tissue level developmental organization under ectopic hemodynamic conditions, and/or altered paracrine/juxtacrine environments.
