Human Blood Sample

A human blood sample is a specimen of whole blood or its separated components, including plasma, serum, and blood cells, collected for laboratory analysis. After collection under controlled conditions, researchers can separate these components by centrifugation and examine immune cells, antibodies, proteins, nucleic acids, or signs of infection using microscopy, immunoassays, culture, or molecular tests. In immunology and infection research, blood samples help characterize host immune responses, detect pathogens or immune markers, monitor disease progression, and evaluate treatments. Standardized handling, appropriate anticoagulants, storage, and processing times are essential because changes in cell viability or biomolecule stability can influence results and reproducibility.

Detection of Rhesus Factor in Human Blood Samples using Magnetic Levitation

2025

This video demonstrates the detection of the Rhesus (Rh) factor in blood samples using a magnetic levitation instrument. The magnetic field aligns and levitates beads and blood cells based on density. Treating the samples with anti-Rh antibodies results in intermediate-density bead-cell complexes' formation, allowing for the differentiation of Rh-positive and Rh-negative red blood cells.

Blood samples are useful for assessing biomarkers of physiological states or disease in vivo. Here we describe the methodology to sample blood from the lateral tail vein in the rat. This method provides rapid samples with minimal pain and invasiveness.

Improved Method for the Preparation of a Human Cell-based, Contact Model of the Blood-Brain Barrier

Establishment of human models of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) can benefit research into brain conditions associated with BBB failure. We describe here an improved technique for preparation of a contact BBB model, which permits coculturing of human astrocytes and brain endothelial cells on the opposite sides of a porous membrane.

This protocol allows for the reliable generation and characterization of blood outgrowth endothelial cells (BOECs) from a small volume of adult peripheral blood. BOECs can be used as a surrogate for endothelial cells from patients with vascular disorders and as a substrate for the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells.
