Il-4 Supplementation

IL-4 supplementation is the controlled addition of interleukin-4, a cytokine that regulates immune-cell development and function, to a biological system. In cultured cells, exogenous IL-4 binds the IL-4 receptor, activates Janus kinases and STAT6, and changes transcriptional programs that support T-helper 2 responses, B-cell antibody class switching, and alternative macrophage activation. Researchers use this supplementation to polarize immune cells, model cytokine environments, and examine host responses to infectious agents under defined conditions. Because dose, timing, and cell type influence outcomes, IL-4 supplementation helps dissect mechanisms of inflammation, pathogen control, tissue repair, and immune dysregulation in vitro and in experimental models.

Current treatments of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) aim at alleviating disease symptoms but may cause severe side effects. Thus, alternative strategies are being investigated in animal colitis models. Here, we explain how the beneficial effects of diet supplements on clinical IBD signs are analyzed in such a colitis model.
