L3 Vertebrae Analysis

L3 vertebrae analysis is the systematic evaluation of the third lumbar vertebra to assess its anatomy, structure, and relationship to surrounding spinal tissues. Using radiographs, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging, clinicians examine vertebral shape, alignment, cortical and trabecular bone, and nearby discs and neural structures for abnormalities. This assessment can support the evaluation of fractures, degenerative changes, deformity, infection, tumors, and bone loss, while also providing an anatomical reference for lumbar procedures and quantitative research. Accurate analysis helps guide diagnosis, treatment planning, follow-up, and investigation of spinal health.

General Structure of a Vertebra

2025

A typical vertebra, with the exception of the sacrum and coccyx, consists of a body, a vertebral arch, and seven different projections termed processes. The anterior portion of the vertebrae, the body, supports about half the body’s weight. The vertebral bodies progressively increase in size and thickness from the cervical region to the lumbar region of the vertebral column. The intervertebral discs present between the bodies of adjacent vertebrae firmly unites them, forming a continuous column.

In this protocol, two approaches are described to make uniaxial compression testing of mouse lumbar vertebrae more attainable. First, the conversion of a three-point bending machine to a compression testing machine is described. Second, an embedding method for preparing the loading surface that uses bone cement is adapted for mouse lumbar vertebrae.

Surgical Induction of Lumbar Spine Instability in Mouse Model: A Surgical Procedure for the Resection of the Lumbar Spinous Processes and Connected Ligaments in Murine Model
