Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgery is a medical specialty that diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Surgeons restore structure and function by repairing damaged tissues, stabilizing fractures with fixation devices, replacing diseased joints, or using minimally invasive arthroscopy to visualize and treat internal abnormalities. These procedures address trauma, arthritis, congenital disorders, sports injuries, and degenerative disease, often reducing pain and improving mobility. Advances in imaging, biomaterials, surgical navigation, and rehabilitation continue to refine patient-specific treatment and support faster recovery, making orthopedic surgery central to restoring movement and quality of life.

Culturing human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (hMSCs) with autologous serum, reduces the risks of rejection by xenogeneic material and other negative effects. It also allows for the recovery of a subset of mesodermal progenitors, which can deliver fresh hMSCs. Embedding hMSCs in an autologous fibrin clot enables easy handling and effective surgical implantation.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals1 dictates that rodent survival surgery be performed aseptically. Aseptic technique utilizes specific practices that minimize the contamination of the surgical site, including patient preparation, surgeon preparation, sterilization of instruments and other supplies, and the use of a clean and controlled environment. Presurgical planning,...

Rodent Stereotaxic Surgery

Stereotaxic (or stereotactic) surgery is a method used to manipulate the brain of living animals. This technique allows researchers to accurately target deep structures within the brain through the use of a stereotaxic atlas, which provides the 3D coordinates of each area with respect to anatomical landmarks on the skull. After the skull is exposed, anesthetized animals are mounted on a specialized instrument known as a stereotaxic frame, which enables the precise placement of experimental...
