Repetitive Tms

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique that delivers repeated magnetic pulses to targeted areas of the brain, making it important for altering brain activity without surgery. An electromagnetic coil placed against the scalp generates rapidly changing magnetic fields that induce electric currents in the underlying cortex; stimulation frequency, intensity, and pattern can influence cortical excitability and connected neural circuits. In medicine, rTMS is used most prominently for treatment-resistant depression and is also being investigated for obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, pain, and other neurological or psychiatric conditions. Its targeted action supports both clinical treatment and research on brain function.

Using TMS to Measure Motor Excitability During Action Observation

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...

Source: Taube, W., et.al., Non-invasive Assessment of Changes in Corticomotoneuronal Transmission in Humans. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates a non-invasive method to assess changes in corticomotoneuronal transmission in humans following repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). The study introduces an electrophysiological technique that differentiates fast, direct corticospinal pathways from polysynaptic connections.
