Transplantation Viability Testing

Transplantation viability testing evaluates whether a donor organ or tissue remains sufficiently functional for successful transplantation, helping clinicians make safer allocation decisions. The assessment measures indicators such as cellular integrity, metabolic activity, tissue structure, and blood-flow or perfusion responses during procurement and preservation. In some systems, ex vivo perfusion supports evaluation outside the body by supplying the organ with oxygenated fluid and monitoring its physiological performance. These results can guide acceptance of organs that might otherwise be declined, improve preservation strategies, and reduce complications associated with poor graft function. Viability testing therefore links laboratory measurements with individualized transplant planning and outcomes.

Therapeutic compounds are often first examined in vitro with viability assays. Blind cell counts by a human observer can be highly sensitive to small changes in cell number but do not assess function. Computerized viability assays, as described here, can assess both structure and function in an objective manner.
