Behavioral Ratings

Behavioral ratings are structured assessments that quantify observable actions, experiences, or functional abilities using standardized scales, questionnaires, or trained observer judgments. In neuroscience, they translate complex behaviors into measurable variables by defining specific criteria, assigning numerical scores, and comparing responses across individuals, conditions, or time points. Researchers use behavioral ratings alongside neural recordings, imaging, and physiological measures to relate brain activity to cognition, emotion, motor function, and social behavior. Careful scale selection, rater training, and reliability testing improve consistency, while repeated assessments can track disease progression, treatment response, or changes following an intervention.

The Cyclical Behavior of the Unemployment Rate

2026

The unemployment rate moves in line with the business cycle, rising and falling as the economy contracts or expands. It is countercyclical, meaning it increases during contractions and decreases during expansions. When the economy slows down, firms respond by laying off workers, which raises the number of unemployed people. This increases the unemployment rate. On the other hand, when the economy recovers, firms hire more workers, leading to a fall in unemployment. However, the unemployment rate...

Prolonged and comprehensive monitoring of mice in a home-cage environment provides a deeper understanding of aberrant behavior in murine models of brain diseases. This paper describes the Integrated Behavioral Station (INBEST) as the key component of contemporary behavioral analysis.

Reaction Rate

2020

The rate of reaction is the change in the amount of a reactant or product per unit time. Reaction rates are therefore determined by measuring the time dependence of some property that can be related to reactant or product amounts. Rates of reactions that consume or produce gaseous substances, for example, are conveniently determined by measuring changes in volume or pressure. The mathematical representation of the change in the concentration of reactants and products, over time, is the rate...

Behavioral Determination of Stimulus Pair Discrimination of Auditory Acoustic and Electrical Stimuli Using a Classical Conditioning and Heart-rate Approach

2012

The application of a classical fear conditioning behavioral paradigm for auditory prosthetic research in rats is described. This paradigm provides a mechanism for identifying both detection of, and discrimination between, distinct acoustic and electrical stimuli using heart-rate as an outcome measure.
