Mri Protocol

An MRI protocol is a standardized set of imaging sequences, parameters, and positioning instructions used to produce diagnostic or research-quality magnetic resonance images. It works by combining a strong magnetic field, radiofrequency pulses, and magnetic-field gradients to generate signals from hydrogen nuclei, with differences in relaxation and tissue properties determining image contrast. In neuroscience, protocols can include structural, diffusion, susceptibility, or functional sequences selected to measure anatomy, white-matter organization, blood-oxygen-level changes, or vascular features. Consistent protocols improve image quality and comparability across participants, supporting studies of brain structure, connectivity, development, neurological disease, and treatment response.

Small-animal positron emission tomography enables the assessment of the brain's two main energy substrates: glucose and ketones. In the present method, 11C-acetoacetate and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose are injected sequentially in each animal, and their uptake is measured quantitatively in specific brain regions determined from the magnetic resonance images.
