Stimulus Trigger

A stimulus trigger is a sensory, chemical, or electrical event that initiates a measurable response in the nervous system, linking environmental information to neural activity. When a stimulus changes the membrane potential of a neuron or activates receptor proteins, ion channels can open; if depolarization reaches threshold, the neuron generates an action potential that propagates along its axon and influences downstream cells through synaptic signaling. In neuroscience, stimulus triggers help researchers examine sensory coding, neural excitability, circuit responses, and behavior. Controlled mechanical, visual, auditory, or electrical stimuli also support studies of perception, reflexes, neurological disorders, and brain-computer interfaces.

Inducing Axonal Varicosities with a Micromechanical Stimulus on Neurons

2025

This video demonstrates the induction of axonal varicosities by applying micromechanical stimulus on neurons. The system comprises a micropipette attached to a syringe containing buffer via tubing. Using a micromanipulator, the micropipette is positioned above the neurons. Fluid pressure is then applied to induce varicosities in axons.

Real-Time Electroencephalography-Triggered Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Cortical Excitation

Source: Stefanou, M., et.al. Brain State-dependent Brain Stimulation with Real-time Electroencephalography-Triggered Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the process of real-time EEG-triggered transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to study cortical excitability. The procedure involves positioning the TMS coil over the motor cortex, synchronizing stimulation with specific phases of the EEG signal, and recording motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) to explore...

This protocol describes key steps involved in assessing the sensitivity of the brain of one person to the stimulus processing of a close other by selecting pairs of partners, recording their electroencephalogram (EEG) simultaneously and computing their event-related brain potentials (ERPs).

Triggering a Closed-Loop Stimulation by Neuron Spiking Activity

2025

This video demonstrates the operation of closed-loop stimulation in a rat with a surgically implanted device to record neural activity. Neuronal signals are first recorded and analyzed. Template waveforms are then uploaded, and parameters are defined to trigger closed-loop stimulation.

2016

RNA interference (RNAi) is an extremely valuable tool for uncovering gene function. However, the ability to target genes using RNAi during pre-adult stages is limited in the major human malaria vector Anopheles gambiae. We describe an RNAi protocol to reduce gene function via direct injection during pupal development.
