Kilogram

The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass, providing a standardized reference for measuring how much matter an object contains and distinguishing mass from weight, which depends on gravity. Since 2019, it has been defined by fixing the numerical value of the Planck constant, h, rather than by a physical artifact; a Kibble balance realizes the unit by relating mechanical power to electrical power through precise measurements of voltage, current, velocity, and gravitational acceleration. This definition supports reproducible mass measurements worldwide, strengthens calibration in physics and engineering, and connects everyday weighing to fundamental quantum and electromagnetic principles.

A Refined Aerosol-Based Intratracheal Bleomycin Delivery Method for Reproducible and Minimally Invasive Mouse Models of Pulmonary Fibrosis

2026

Here, we present a protocol to model pulmonary fibrosis in mice using aerosolized bleomycin delivered via the trachea. This optimized method enables uniform, quantitative, and precise delivery without surgical incision, enhancing the reproducibility and reliability of bleomycin-induced fibrosis.

Expressing Solution Concentration

2020

A solute is a component of a solution that is typically present at a much lower concentration than the solvent. Solute concentrations are often described with qualitative terms such as dilute (of relatively low concentration) and concentrated (of relatively high concentration). Concentrations may be quantitatively assessed using a wide variety of measurement units, each convenient for particular applications. Molarity (M) is a useful concentration unit for many applications in chemistry.

Systemic Pilocarpine Treatment: Mouse Model of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

This video presents the procedure for inducing status epilepticus (SE) in mice by systemic administration of pilocarpine to model temporal lobe epilepsy.

Rotational Inertia

Source: Nicholas Timmons, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Inertia is the resistance of an object to being accelerated. In linear kinematics, this concept is directly related to the mass of an object. The more massive an object, the more force is required to accelerate that object. This is seen directly in Newton's second law, which states that force is equal to mass times acceleration. For rotation,...

Development of a Neonatal Piglet Acute Lung Injury Model Recreating the Early Environment of Preterm Infant Lungs

2025

This protocol describes the development of a neonatal piglet model of acute lung injury that models early pathogenic events occurring in the preterm lung, including sub-adequate surfactant quantity, hyperoxia, high-pressure ventilation, and inflammation, to facilitate understanding of molecular triggers of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and enhance therapeutic translation.
