Development of the heart starts on the 18th or 19th day post-fertilization from a group of mesodermal cells called the cardiogenic area.
By day 20, these cells form two endocardial tubes, which quickly fuse to form a primitive heart tube with five distinct regions: the sinus venosus, primitive atrium and ventricle, bulbus cordis, and truncus arteriosus.
From day 22, the heart starts pumping blood from the sinus venosus, which later forms parts of the right atrium, coronary sinus, and SA node.
The primitive atrium differentiates into the pectinate muscles of the atrial walls, while the primitive ventricle forms the trabeculated parts of the ventricles.
The bulbus cordis matures into the outflow tracts for the right and left ventricles, while the truncus arteriosus forms the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk.
The heart tube elongates further in the following days, positioning the atria and ventricles.
Around day 28, the mesoderm thickens to form the endocardial cushions, which develop into heart valves and septums.
By week 9, the heart becomes four-chambered with mature AV and semilunar valves.
The fetal atria are connected by a small opening called the foramen ovale, which closes shortly after birth.
