Bouba Kiki Effect

The Bouba Kiki Effect is a crossmodal correspondence in which people tend to associate the sound “bouba” with rounded shapes and “kiki” with sharp, angular shapes. This pattern may arise because speech sounds, mouth movements, and visual forms share perceptual features: rounded vowels and continuous contours feel similar, whereas abrupt consonants and pointed forms produce a sharper impression. Researchers use unfamiliar word-shape pairs to measure how sound symbolism influences perception, categorization, and meaning formation. The effect provides evidence that some word-form associations may emerge from embodied sensory links, informing research on language development, communication, and visual design.

The aim of the presented protocol is to investigate the role of visual imagery in the bouba/kiki-effect, whether training in noticing the bouba/kiki shape-audio regularities affects the bouba/kiki-effect and the recognition of individual bouba and kiki shapes, and finally what mental images these regularities produce.

Flow Cytometric Analysis of Particle-bound Bet v 1 Allergen in PM10

Here, we present a protocol to quantify allergen-loaded particles by flow cytometry. Ambient particulate matter particles may act as carriers of adsorbed allergens. We show here that flow cytometry, a method widely used to characterize suspended solids >0.5 µm in diameter, can be used to measure these allergen-loaded particles.

Determining the fungal diversity within an environment is a method utilized in occupational health studies to identify health hazards. This protocol describes DNA extraction from occupational air samples for amplification and sequencing of fungal ITS regions. This approach detects many fungal species that can be overlooked by traditional assessment methods.
