Cortical Reorganization Prevention

Cortical reorganization prevention refers to strategies that limit maladaptive changes in the brain’s cortical maps and connections after altered sensory or motor input. When injury, disuse, or sensory loss reduces activity in one cortical region, neighboring representations may expand into the deprived area; maintaining meaningful input and task-specific activity can help preserve functional organization. In behavioral neuroscience and rehabilitation, early motor practice, sensory feedback, and targeted training are used to support adaptive plasticity while reducing unwanted changes associated with impaired movement, abnormal sensation, or persistent pain. Understanding these mechanisms can improve recovery programs and guide interventions that shape brain plasticity after injury.

This model system starts from a myofibroblast-populated fibrin gel that can be used to study endogenous collagen (re)organization real-time in a nondestructive manner. The model system is very tunable, as it can be used with different cell sources, medium additives, and can be adapted easily to specific needs.

Cancer Prevention

2023

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer. Some...

CRISPR-Mediated Reorganization of Chromatin Loop Structure

Chromatin looping plays a significant role in gene regulation; however, there have been no technological advances that allow for selective and reversible modification of chromatin loops. Here we describe a powerful system for chromatin loop re-organization using CRISPR-dCas9 (CLOuD9), demonstrated to selectively and reversibly modulate gene expression at targeted loci.

Calcium Imaging of Cortical Neurons using Fura-2 AM

Calcium signals play a key role in many cellular processes including gene expression, survival and differentiation. Here we demonstrate how to perform calcium imaging using Fura-2 AM. Calcium imaging is a valuable tool to study the regulation of intracellular calcium in real time and its regulation of signaling cascades.
