Neurobiological Basis

The neurobiological basis of behavior refers to the neural, cellular, and physiological processes that generate and regulate how organisms respond to internal and external conditions. Sensory information is integrated by neural circuits, where patterns of neuronal activity, synaptic communication, neurotransmitters, hormones, and brain plasticity shape motivation, learning, emotion, and action. Studying these mechanisms connects observable behavior with brain function and helps explain how experience, development, and genetic variation influence behavioral outcomes. This framework supports research in neuroscience, psychology, and medicine, including investigations of neurological and psychiatric disorders and the development of targeted interventions.

Here we present a protocol to induce activity-based anorexia (ABA) in female adolescent mice. ABA is a condition of hyperactivity evoked by imposing food restriction on rodents with access to a running wheel. This phenomenon is being used as a model to study the underlying neurobiology of anorexia nervosa.

An Introduction to Developmental Neurobiology

2023

Developmental neuroscience is a field that explores how the nervous system is formed, from early embryonic stages through adulthood. Although it is known that neural progenitor cells follow predictable stages of proliferation, differentiation, migration, and maturation, the mechanisms controlling the progression through each stage are incompletely understood. Studying development is not only important for understanding how complex structures are assembled, but also for characterizing and...

Accrual Basis of Accounting

2025

Accrual basis accounting records revenues and expenses when they are earned or incurred, regardless of when the associated cash is received or paid. This approach emphasizes the economic substance of transactions, aligning financial reporting with the actual timing of business activity rather than the cash flow timeline. Accrual accounting provides a comprehensive and consistent view of financial performance by recognizing income when goods or services are delivered and expenses when they...

The comparative species approach allows behavioral neuroscientists to explore various neurobiological factors associated with specific behaviors viewed as characteristic of a specific animal model. Taking advantage of naturally occurring differences in behavior between closely related species, this technique doesn’t require invasive techniques to manipulate the expression of the behavior.

Cash Basis of Accounting

2025

The cash basis of accounting records revenues and expenses strictly based on the timing of cash transactions. Under this approach, income is recognized only when cash is received, and expenses are recorded only when payments are made. This method deviates from accrual accounting, which recognizes revenues when earned and expenses when incurred, regardless of cash movement. The primary appeal of the cash basis lies in its simplicity. It suits small businesses, sole proprietors, and service-based...
