Psycho-physiological Experiment

A psycho-physiological experiment is a scientific study that examines how psychological states and behavioral responses relate to measurable changes in the body. Researchers present controlled stimuli or tasks while recording physiological signals such as heart rate, skin conductance, respiration, muscle activity, or brain activity, then compare these measures with performance, reports, or observed behavior. This approach helps identify bodily patterns associated with attention, emotion, stress, arousal, and decision-making. In behavioral research, psycho-physiological experiments provide objective evidence about processes that may not be captured through self-report alone, supporting studies of cognition, human interaction, mental health, and responses to environmental or experimental conditions.

A detailed protocol for an experimental paradigm to assess the effectiveness with which children regulate emotion is described. Children are randomly assigned to use specific emotion regulation strategies, negative emotions are elicited with film clips, and changes in subsequent psychophysiology index the extent to which emotion regulation is effective.

We present a protocol of personalized script-driven trauma-related imagery and clinical assessments within a comparison design for investigating peritraumatic dissociation (PD), psychophysiological reactions, i.e. heart rate (HR) and skin conductance (SC), and psychological features of often severely traumatized individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD).

Generalized Psychophysiological Interaction (PPI) Analysis of Memory Related Connectivity in Individuals at Genetic Risk for Alzheimer's Disease

This manuscript describes how to implement a psychophysiological interaction analysis to reveal task-dependent changes in functional connectivity between a selected seed region and voxels in other regions of the brain. Psychophysiological interaction analysis is a popular method to examine task effects on brain connectivity, distinct from traditional univariate activation effects.

What is an Experiment?

2023

An experiment is a planned activity carried out under controlled conditions. The purpose of an experiment is to investigate the relationship between two variables. When one variable causes change in another, we call the first variable the explanatory or independent variable. The affected variable is called the response or dependent variable. In a randomized experiment, the researcher manipulates values of the explanatory variable and measures the resulting changes in the response variable. The...
